With the rush of year end orders and numerous conferences, we have gotten a bit behind in updating this section of the web site. As always, things continue to be interesting with new developments in AMS, very high current DC electron beams and RBS/PIXE analysis.

Electron Cooling -- For sometime, the electron cooling group from Fermilab has been working with our in-house research Pelletron to develop a DC "recirculating" high current electron beam. This is the same type of Pelletron configuration that is presently in use for the Free Electron Laser (FEL) at the University of California at Santa Barbara and under development at the University of Central Florida when pulsed electron beams are used. In January, the Fermilab group at NEC under the direction of Dr. Sergei Nagaitsev set a new record, achieving a maximum recirculated current up to 0.7 amps at energies between 1.0 and 1.5 MeV. The group is now moving forward with plans for a larger, 4.3 MeV system to be located at Fermilab.

134 MC-SNICS -- Interest in high throughput AMS is continuing. The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute ordered a 134 sample multi-cathode SNICS source for their existing AMS system. This 134 MC-SNICS will allow them to maintain their current sample throughput while using one of their injector beamlines for AMS gas source development. The NEC 134 MC-SNICS will be shipped in the Spring, 1999.

SNEAP '99 -- The Physics Division and the Surface Modification and Characterization Research Center at Oak Ridge National Laboratory will be hosting SNEAP in 1999. It has been scheduled for the week of October 24 at the Hilton in Knoxville, Tennessee. To get on the mailing list, please fill out the questionnaire on the "Conference Information" page.

Compact AMS -- At the Accelerator Applications Conference in Denton, Texas (CAARI ‘98) Dr. Martin Suter announced the results of their work on the compact AMS system they have designed with a 500 keV tandem Pelletron. For 14C/12C they routinely achieve a precision of 0.4% to 0.5% with a background of 2 to 8 x 10-15. The ETH/PSI Group in Zurich is continuing their work in sub-MeV AMS to investigate stripping yield, molecular destruction and other radio nuclides. Meanwhile, NEC's first commercially available compact AMS system has been tested at the factory and is being packed for shipment.

40 MC-SNICS -- At the other end of the scale, the 20 MV tandem Pelletron group at Comision Nacional de Energia, Buenos Aires, Argentina, recently purchased a 40 sample multi-cathode SNICS source for use on the 20UD Pelletron. This will allow them to expand their AMS capability and throughput.

New AMS System -- The AMS Group at the University of Arizona under the direction of Professor Doug Donahue recently purchased a new 3 MV tandem Pelletron based AMS system. The model 9SDH-2 AMS Pelletron is part of a modernization and expansion project to increase the throughput and overall versatility of this world class AMS facility.

Data Collection Demo -- Developments are occurring in other analytical areas as well. The RC43 analytical data collection software has recently been updated. Version 3.2 collects data from four detectors simultaneously, capturing RBS, ERD, PIXE and NRA readings. It communicates with the accelerator control system to control the data collection runs. The data can be displayed in linear, log or polar form. It also provides crystal axial channel images and microprobe images. The RC43 analytical data collection software is designed to work with RUMP, GUPIX and Alegria. A demo on CD-ROM is being developed and will be available soon.
