Electrostatic analyzers greatly reduce the energy dispersion of the injected beam. This eliminates possible interference from the high and low energy ‘tails’ of the abundant beams. These ‘tails’, which result from the ion creation processes in the system, can be accelerated as beam impurities with beams of low isotopic abundance and give false counts in the rare isotope detector if the electrostatic deflector is not included.
