Radiocarbon Conference 2025 Recap

July 22, 2025

Earlier this month, NEC attended the 25th Annual Radiocarbon Conference (June 30th-July 4th, 2025) in Krakow, Poland. The conference featured various speakers, discussions, and presentations highlighting radiocarbon research and related products.

Check out the recap below:

Speaker Series:

  1. Walter Kutschera spoke about the background of AMS to kick off the conference.
  2. Both Gianluca Quatra and Stewart Fallon gave impressive talks on forensics research. Quatra spoke about AMS dating and the fallacies in TV media, while Fallon focused on radiocarbon ages of birth and death via teeth, hair, and nail samples.
  3. Lucille Beck shared about excavation measurements done on cathedrals in France, including Notre Dame, via lead in paint samples.
  4. Megan Conger talked about new regulations that are proving origins and encouraging the return of thousands of samples to First Nations.
  5. Carla Carvalho spoke about experiments using algae to absorb oil from the water near Rio de Janeiro. By measuring the biogenic fraction of the algae, they can determine which fuels are adding to pollution.

CEGS:

Jim Wilson attended the conference with us and conducted a discussion with about a dozen attendees about his product, the CEGS. Check out the CEGS here.

PIMS Workshop:

NEC hosted a tour of the laboratory in Krakow currently housing an NEC PIMS System. The workshop had 40 attendees, so we split into two equal groups for the tour and demonstration. Attendees experienced a live data collection conducted by the PIMS and listened to Stewart Freeman’s presentation on the system. We are continuing to integrate the PIMS with Thermo Fisher equipment for combined rare and abundant isotope measurements, using the powerful Qtegra software.

Learn more about the PIMS System here. For additional questions or information, contact NEC.

Thanks for a great Radiocarbon Conference!
