It’s been a rewarding summer for NEC!

Our team attended some incredible conferences around the world, the first in Vienna, Austria and the second in Santiago, Chile.

2nd IAEA International Conference on Accelerators for Research and Innovation

During the week of June 22-26, NEC headed to the 2nd IAEA International Conference on Accelerators for Research and Innovation in Vienna, Austria. We spoke with various industry peers and toured laboratory facilities. Here are some highlights:

• Using E-beams for sterilization and processing, specifically in food and hospital safety applications
• Work being done at the Louvre: IBA, PIXE, E-beams
• Studies about the use of in-air PIXE to do noninvasive material analysis on precious artifacts
• Talks on cultural heritage, restoration, and environmental-related studies

4th Radiocarbon and Diet Conference & 3rd Latin American Radiocarbon Conference (CLARa)

From July 6-10, we headed to Santiago, Chile  for the 4th Radiocarbon and Diet Conference & 3rd Latin American Radiocarbon Conference (CLARa). We attended talks by industry experts and explored the city. Here are some highlights:

• Research on dating the food inside deceased animals and humans, which helps tell researchers where people came from & went
• Latin America’s diverse culture and its relation to radiocarbon research – how it can help explain the history and current state of many different research areas
• Understanding rock layers and 14C dating showed migration patterns of a local indigenous group due to volcanic activity in B.C., Canada
• Talk on how 14C production in the upper atmosphere may change based on cosmic rays or solar activity
